Handrail Tubes FAQs

What size tubing is used for a handrail?

The size of the tubing used for handrails depends on the project specifications and UK Building Regulations. We offer Handrail Tubes in two sizes, 3.2m and 6.4m. These are available with diameters ranging from 26.9mm to 60.3mm and thicknesses ranging from 2.6mm to 3.6mm.

How thick is Handrail Tubing?

At BM Steel, Handrail Tubing is available in thicknesses of 2.6mm, 3.2mm, and 3.6mm. Order the tubing you need for your project conveniently online. We offer fast delivery, unbeatable value for money, and customer care of the highest standards.

What is the standard handrail diameter?

UK Building Regulations do not limit handrail diameter to one size. According to the regulations, the diameter should be between 32mm and 50mm. We offer Handrail Tubing with diameters of various sizes, including 26.9mm, 33.7mm, 42.4mm, 48.3mm, and 60.3mm.

What are the railing regulations in the UK?

UK Building Regulations include several handrail-related regulations. Handrail Tubes may have a circular or oval cross-section and a diameter between 32mm and 50mm. They should be non-slip, and they should not become too cold or too hot to touch. The handrail colour should contrast with its surroundings, and it must not be highly reflective. The finishing of the ends should reduce the risk of clothing being caught on them.

Handrails should be at least 900mm from the surface of the level they’re attached to. If you want to install lower line handrails, they should be 600mm above the floor pitch. Situate handrails 75mm from the wall for easy gripping. The minimum gap between spindles is 100mm. Handrails on outdoor roofs and balconies must be at least 1.1m high. Lastly, handrails must be fitted on both sides of stairs (continuing to the very bottom) and on balconies or levels between stair sets, wherever levels include more than three risers, and they must be fitted on both sides of ramps with an incline of 600mm or more.

What is the maximum gap between railing in the UK?

The maximum permitted gap between railing spindles in the UK is 100mm. The gap between the Handrail Tubing and the wall should be 75mm.

What are Handrail Tubes made of?

Handrail Tubes can be manufactured using various materials. BM Steel stocks professionally designed and manufactured hot rolled steel Handrail Tubes.
