GRP FAQs

What does GRP stand for?

GRP stands for Glass-Reinforced Plastic, also known as fibreglass.

What is GRP made of?

GRP is made of a combination of glass fibres and polymer or plastic. The mixture is processed into a solid material by moulding and setting. Choose from GRP Open-Mash Grating, Solid Top Grating, Handrails, Nose Covers, Profiles, and much more at BM Steel.

What are the properties of GRP?

GRP has many desirable properties that make it a popular choice for a variety of applications in construction and other industries. These properties include a high strength to weight ratio, electrically non-conductive, lightweight, impressive durability, corrosion resistance, and radar/radio wave transparency.

What is GRP used for?

GRP has a plethora of applications in many different industries. Common products that GRP is used for include drain coverings and water pipes, handrails, anti-slip protection for retrofitting wet and dry flooring, wind turbine blades and helicopter rotor blades, electronic enclosures, industrial- and public-area safety mesh grating, bridging ladders, and kayaks and other sporting equipment.

Can GRP be recycled?

While the process is difficult and expensive, GRP can be recycled. The process includes physical recycling, chemical recycling, and energy recovery.

What’s the difference between GRP and FRP?

GRP is usually used in commercial applications, while FRP is used in commercial and engineering applications.

Glass-Reinforced Plastic (GRP) is a Composite Material that is manufactured by reinforcing polymers such as epoxy, polyester, or vinyl with glass fibres. Fibre-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) is also a Composite Material. However, it’s made by reinforcing polymers such as bismaleimides, epoxies, phenolics, polyimides, and vinyl esters with fibres such as Aramid (Kevlar 49), boron, carbon (AS4), carbon (IM-7), E-glass, graphite (P-100), quartz, S-glass, and Spectra 1000.
