Plastic decking posts are used to support raised decking structures, holding bearers and joists at the required height above ground level. The recycled plastic posts we stock meet the same material standard as our joists and battens: rot-proof, dimensionally stable, and maintenance-free in permanent ground contact.

Our plastic posts are fixed into prepared ground holes and cemented in place to a third of their length, forming a stable base for the bearer and joist network above. Available in standard lengths, they are compatible with BM Steel's full subframe system.

Plastic Posts FAQs

How deep should plastic decking posts be set into the ground?

Plastic decking posts should be set to approximately one third of their total length. Dig the hole, position the post vertically, and cement it in place, checking for level before the mix sets.

Do plastic posts need to be set in concrete?

Yes. For a stable, long-term installation, plastic posts should be set in concrete or a fast-setting post mix. This ensures they remain upright and level under the load of the deck structure above.

What is the correct post spacing for a decking subframe?

Posts should be spaced at 1,000mm intervals along the bearer lines. This spacing is designed to work in conjunction with the standard joist and bearer lengths in BM Steel's plastic subframe range.

Can plastic posts be used as fence posts?

Yes, recycled plastic posts can be used for light-duty fencing and boundary applications as well as decking subframes. Their resistance to moisture and ground contact makes them well suited to any permanent outdoor post installation, though load requirements should always be checked for fencing applications.

What length plastic posts do I need for my deck?

Post length depends on the finished deck height and ground conditions. As a guide, posts should be set to approximately one third of their total length into the ground, so a 900mm post would be set 300mm deep and provide around 600mm above ground. For a raised or stepped deck, longer posts will be required. Contact BM Steel for guidance on sizing for your specific project.

Can plastic posts be used with a composite decking system?

Yes. Plastic decking posts are fully compatible with composite decking systems. They form part of the recycled plastic subframe that sits beneath your composite boards, working alongside plastic bearers and joists to create a complete, maintenance-free deck structure.
